Hi Folks,
First off I want to wish everyone a very healthy and Happy Thanksgiving. It's been a very wonderful year and I personally feel that I have a lot to be thankful for. Of course I would be nowhere without my family, I have my health and I live in a wonderful place. It's so easy these days for us to quibble about this & that and to loose perspective of just how good we really do have it. Sure, things could be better, but they just as easily could be a whole lot worse. My goal these days is to try and look on the bright side of things and as I look forward to a wonderful dinner with friends and family, I am very thankful for everything I have. All my best.
So it was another week of up and down weather. It's hard enough to figure out what to do outside these days, much less what to wear when you're doing it. [wry grin] I had too much work to do to be able to get in any ice climbing, but I did get in a couple of afternoons on the bike. That's right, while folks were climbing the Black Dike, Pinnacle Gully, Shoestring and even Standard Route at Frankenstein, I was riding my bike over here on the flat trails behind Cathedral & Whitehorse and even some over by the quarry in Redstone. It was a bit on the chilly side, but once I got going it was just fine. The very fully thing was riding the fat tire bike all bundled up in 26 degree temps on Sunday and then up near the Moats in 50 degree temps on Monday. Go figure.
I looked back through my archives for the past 5 years and this is pretty common. We have often had some early season ice, followed by a thaw/rain, followed by cold and ice formatting, a quick that/rain in late December and then right on into full-on winter. From what I can see I don't think this is going to deviate much from the norm. Let's be thankful for the earl ice we had, and keep our fingers and toes crossed for the cold and ice that we know is on the way.
I truly appreciate the 18 of you who have so far contributed to this year's fundraiser. Here's a thought for you - imagine what it would be like without this weekly mailing. You wouldn't get this latest info about the state of ice here in the Mount Washington Valley and vicinity every Thursday. You wouldn't be able to make your plans for the weekend, confident in the knowledge of what's going up here in the ephemeral world of New Hampshire ice. You wouldn't be able to look at the Cathedral webcam or check the weather station to confirm what those weather pundits are saying! You gotta admin, that would be a loss.
The White Mountain Report newsletter has been put out consistently since 1998. I have archived almost all of the Reports from as far back as September of 1999 and you can read them online at any time! The current traffic on NEClimbs.com is about 1,450 unique visits a day, has over 1.4 million monthly "hits" and this funky little newsletter goes weekly out to over 1,200 subscribers every Thursday. The expense of the running NEClimbs and putting out The White Mountain Report go on year 'round. PLEASE REMEMBER, it's your contribution that makes this newsletter and the NEClimbs web site possible.

While there was ice forming in the lower elevations this past week, the 1.25 inches of rain and temps almost in the 60's we had on Tuesday killed it all. As of Wednesday everything was back to ground zero. There is likely still ice in the upper elevations, but even it will likely be suspect. I'm leaving the IceCON rating at a 1, figuring that things will hopefully come back on the Mountain fairly quickly, but I doubt that will be the case for the lower elevations for another week or so. Especially with another warm front on the way for late in the weekend through the early part of next week!
