Incredibly busy this week, so this will be short and sweet. I have been getting calls, texts, emails, PM’s one Facebook, tweets (well maybe not tweets) all asking if there will be ice to climb this weekend. IMNSHO (in my not so humble opinion for the uninitiated) there will be NO ICE in the lower elevations this weekend! We have had 3 days of rain, totaling almost 3 inches, and what little was there on Monday, has been washed away. Sure there are fragments, but nothing that is safe in any way.
Is that a bad thing, well I suppose it depends on your point of view. If you have your tools, crampons and screws all sharpened up and are totally Jonesing for ice to climb, obviously the answer is a resounding YES. If you are like some of us who have been living through the drought for the past year, well not so much. Getting 3 daze of rain, just before ice season, while the ground is still unthawed, is actually a good thing. Once we get some cold, which should happen around the first of next week, we will be good to go. In the meantime, ride the bike, grab some dry rock on Saturday or Sunday if you can ‘cause it’s going to be sunny and warmish, and enjoy. Winter will be here soon enough.
If you want to see just how wacky the weather has been up here, here are a few pictures from Monday. While I was riding my bike on the trails one the East side, Matt Bowman was guiding someone up in Crawford Notch. Go figure aye? Regardless, none of that ice is there now, and the trails are too wet to ride as well.

Bear Notch, Hurricane Mountain and Evans Notch Roads are closed for the season, as is Cathedral Ledge Road.

I can't actually say that there is nothing out there that can't be climbed. That would be foolish. But for the average, or a little above average climber, that's probably correct. That said, I did hear that there is climbable ice on Parasol in Dixville Notch. Not sure how that will be after we get a foot of heavy wet snow on Saturday. Regardless, here's a few pix I took today just to document things.

VALLEY CYCLING:
The trails have been great, but now there’s a bit of snow here & there. I figure that after the rain and when it warms a bit on Saturday, it will all be OK for a while. It’s time to get your fat tore bike cleaned up and tuned. Like the ice season, fat tire season will be here before you know it!
