October 31, 2019

Hi Folks,

And a Happy All Hallows you all. Yup, it's Halloween. The annual holiday celebrated each year on October 31. It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. ... And the evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween.

Well we've had 2 days of rain this week, and then a nice sunny day that just started to dry out, and now it's rained all day. The only good thing is that it's been fairly warm. Not a chance of ice right now, but that's likely to change over the next few daze with upper elevation temps dropping to teens on Friday and upper 20's on Saturday. I still wouldn't count on skiable snow or climbable ice, but there is no doubt it's going to come.

In keeping with the coming ice season I did write a review this week of the Petzl ERGONOMIC ice tools. You can see if I love or hate them here:

Other than that, there's not a lot to talk about. We're all in a holding pattern that's realistically going to be another month. So get your gear together and make sure you're all set, so when it happens you'll be ready to get out and have some fun.

EVEREST: '91 to '19 PRESENTATION:
Three Mount Washington Valley climbers who have stood on top of the world will join together in a special event for the ages! EVEREST: '91 to '19 will feature local climbers Rick Wilcox, Thom Pollard - Public Speaker/Video Producer/Adventurer, and Mark Synnott, each of whom summited Everest at different times covering a period from 1991 to 2019. What is amazing during this time is the outright transformation of a starstruck climbing world that turned inside out over Everest - beginning with Wilcox pioneering in 1991 to Pollard discovering the body of George Mallory in 1999 to Synnott visiting "the year Everest broke" in 2019.

Ice Conditions Report:
Selected Ice Conditions effective December 26, 2024
We sure made a big jump in the state-o-the-ice in the past few days. While things are a LOT better, they aren't fantastic quite yet! But if we hold to this warmish-days and cold night pattern we are in right now, things will be really happening by early next week. You know things are on track when you actually see the Frankenstein Amphitheater looking good!
Huntington Ravine ther eis ice BUT avalanche danger

ICE FEST 2020:
Oh Yeah...That's Right. It's time to think about ICE FEST 2020 folks! I know the the web site & Blog haven't been updated yet, but you should put the date on your calendars and start making your plans. # 28 is going to be a fun one that's for sure.

I do have one teaser for you... The main presenter for this year will be the most amazing Mark Richey! Mark is a great human being and a phenomenal climber. His most recent achievement was on August 5th, 2019 pulling off the First Ascent of Link Sar, a 7040 meters peak in the Karakoram. A spectacular summit with an amazing team that included Steve Swenson, Graham Zimmerman and Chris Wright. The route took six days of difficult climbing of over 30 technical pitches, over approximately 8,000 vertical feet from ABC and about 11,300 feet from basecamp.

The vias normales had perfect lines but new rock was the essence of climbing for us; throwing loose holds over the shoulder, feeling the exposed grains crush like sugar on footholes....
