If you think Cathedral Ledge is "rock solid", you might think again... The big news recently is a major rockfall on Cathedral Ledge that took out the bottom of Retaliation and made a mess of the trails between the starts of Ventilator and Three Birches. Lots of boulders, dirt and trees knocked down.
IMO it isn't a good idea to wander around down there. In addition, access across the upper ledge past the Barber Wall to get to Upper Refuse is quite treacherous. Not just for the traversee, but also for any people that might be below. Some work has been done, but there will need to be some more before it's safe overall. A lot of cats & dogs kind of rain would really help clean things up.
I can't actually say that there is nothing out there that can't be climbed. That would be foolish. But for the average, or a little above average climber, that's probably correct. That said, I did hear that there is climbable ice on Parasol in Dixville Notch. Not sure how that will be after we get a foot of heavy wet snow on Saturday. Regardless, here's a few pix I took today just to document things.

The weather has really been up and down over the past week but folks want to climb regardless! So here's a picture of an intrepid party on Thin Air in the snow. There was another on what I think was Women In Love the same day as well as one on The Prow. YIKES...
SOME LOCAL/NATIONAL PANDEMIC THOUGHTS:
Sure, not as many people are dying from COVID, but you can still get pretty sick. Plus if you get it you run the risk of getting "long COVID" which is no fun at all! A 33 year old Federal Judge from FL has ruled that people can fly and use public transportation maskless. Go figure! I'm wearing mine folks. Honestly I have no intention of taking any risks at this stage of the game.
New Hampshire:
0 New deaths reported
2,525 Active cases
108 Current hospitalizations for COVID
2,472 Total deaths due to COVID-19
United States:
Confirmed: 80,850,913
Deaths: 990,677
I find JHU's Daily COVID-19 Data in Motion report to be very informative. It shares critical data on COVID-19 from the last 24 hours in a short 1 minute animated video format.
OUR ONLY WAY OUT IS IF YOU GET VACCINATED, WHERE RECOMMENDED PLEASE STILL WEAR A MASK, WASH YOUR HANDS!

VALLEY CYCLING:
Trails in general are excellent on East and West sides. Sure, there is a little mud in the regular places, but overall the riding is good here in the Valley. Not so good u in Gorham and the like and Kingdom Trails is still closed. But overall there is plenty to keep you occupied in the woods.
Mobile Version Of NEClimbs:
Up on one of the Mount Washington Valley's finest crags and want to know what that climb you're looking at is? Or maybe you're on your way up from Boston and want to check out the Ice Report for your upcoming weekend plans. Or more likely, you're at work just want to daydream about your next adventure. Well if you have a smart phone handy, you can get to NEClimbs from anywhere you have cell service. While it doesn't offer every single feature of the site and it's not an "app", in mobile form, it does do a whole lot and is very useful. Here is the live link to the mobile version of NEClimbs:
Check it out and if you have issues on your specific phone, please feel free to let me know.

During the qualifying round I heard the contestant ahead of me introduced: 'Hardest redpoint: 5.14b, hardest on-sight: 5.13c' (Geoff Weigand). The contestant after me: 'Hardest redpoint: K2' (Greg Child).
Climbing is a very dangerous sport. You can get hurt or even kill yourself. When you go climbing, you do so of your own free will. Everything on this site is to be taken with a grain of salt. Don't blame us if you get up some totally heinous route, in over your head and fall and hurt yourself.
