November 10, 2022

Hi Folks,

I took a quick drive up to the Notch this morning just for fun. Of course there isn't any ice to be seen, but it was a glorious morning and worth the drive. Interestingly it was 29 here in the Valley when I left at 8:15, and 39 when I stopped at the Dry River Campground. Right now it's 47 at the house at 10AM. [sheesh]

I finally got out climbing with Brad this afternoon. He's been dealing with a bum ankle for the summer and this was the first time he's been out this summer and it was darn near a picture perfect day. Upper 60's and not a single cloud in the sky. We just did 4 short single pitch sport climbs, but it was great to be back out sharing a rope together.

In case you notice the knot in the rope... I was in a hurry when I left the house and I grabbed an older rope to climb on. I knew it was going to be somewhat short, but thought it would be OK for a little 40' cliff. Unfortunately I'd forgotten that last winter I'd used it on my roof and actually cut into two pieces. [sigh] So we had to use a double-fisherman knot to tie it together so it was long enough. [HA]

UIAA GENERAL ASSEMBLY - CLIMATE CHANGE SUMMIT - NEClimbs.com MENTIONED:
In the second part of the General Assembly UIAA delegates discuss how climate change is affecting how we use the mountains and what member federations can do to combat global climate change. The annual UIAA General Assembly is the largest, and most important, gathering of UIAA member federations, commissions, representatives and partners. The 2022 UIAA General Assembly, scheduled for 29 October, will take place in Banff, Canada and hosted by the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC).

This entire presentation is excellent, worth watching in its entirety and needless to say concerning. If you start watching at about 26 minutes you will see a presentation about climate change and how it directly affects ice climbing and guiding in the Mount Washington Valley. Several years ago I gave guide and team member Jimmy Voorhies access to all the pic archives I have accumulated over the past 20+ years and over 300 of these were featured in the presentation and analysis. It's nice that they credited NEClimbs.com and makes me feel good about the work I've done documenting the state of the ice in the Mount Washington Valley over the past 22+ years.
DMM PRODUCT RECALL:
We have been made aware of a near-miss incident involving the failure of a DMM Director connector (A647BS) that parted at the swivel assembly. The user was unhurt. Our investigation has identified a product fault that, under certain circumstances, may allow the swivel assembly to unscrew and subsequently part. The same swivel assembly is used in the following products, and as such we are issuing a recall for all items that share this assembly.

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION:
This Saturday, Nov 19, I'll be with the Jim McLaughlin Band at Ledge brewing in Intervale. Not sure of the time, but likely 6-9. Great rock band with LOTS of jams!

INSTANT ICE REPORT: 0
Nope not yet peeps. [sigh] The weather is just teasing us just a bit right now. Dropped down to 19 overnight on Tuesday, popping back up to mid 50's during the day but only 30 overnight on Wednesday and already up to 45 at Cathedral at 9:30! It looks like the weekend might even warm back up a bit, at least after Friday's predicted rain event. [YIKES] It's not that unusual and at least there should be water in the system for when it does get cold. Alden Pellett reported some ice skims up at the top of Glass Menagerie at Willoughby Wednesday morning and he is predicting ice in Tucks on Thanksgiving! [LOL] Honestly I'd say that the weekend should be good for some more rock and ride! Savoring each day we're given is all I can think about right now.

I find JHU's Daily COVID-19 Data in Motion report to be very informative. It shares critical data on COVID-19 from the last 24 hours in a short 1 minute animated video format.

OUR ONLY WAY OUT IS IF YOU GET VACCINATED, WHERE RECOMMENDED PLEASE STILL WEAR A MASK, WASH YOUR HANDS!

VALLEY CYCLING:
I'm alternating between the gym and riding the mountain bike right now, and some days doing both! I figure I will do whatever I can, to get ready for the upcoming ice season. Whenever that happens. And frankly trail conditions are damn good for early November. I've hit the gym 4x, ridden a nice local West side loop, the Marshall and got in a fun Outer Limits ride on the East side with my buddy Phil. Shucks, I think unless things radically change, I'm still pretty far away from needing to pull out the fat tire bike. Hey, I don't mind this at all. As long as it's not full-on winter conditions, I'll take every minute of outside time I can get.

Climbers seem to forget that we said in our introduction that there were simply '50 classic routes', not 'the 50 classics'. We chose 50 from a list of about 120. Only a torturer will ever pry loose from our lips the names of those other 70 classics...
