Hi Folks,

Maybe you've been noticing, as I have, that the foliage this year just ain't what it has been. Over all it's just plain dull. And in many of the places where it should be full of color, there is barely anything other than green. If you are in town just look at the hills off the North South Local Road. It might as well be summer, rather than late fall. [sheesh]

At every time of the year there are incidents that take place that are really hard to understand. I gotta say that this is sure one of them. I think that these three sentences from the report itself pretty much spells it all out:

"...was not prepared for a hike of this caliber and did not possess the necessary gear to hike the toughest trail in the White Mountains, particularly with the wet, cold and icy conditions."

"After a herculean effort, the rescue crew started carrying him down the trail at 11:15 p.m."

"Trying to navigate the obstacles and debris in Huntington Ravine at night, in the rain is not something that should go unnoticed."

FREEZE//THAW - the VIDEO:
If you were at Ice Fest last year, you should have seen the initial version of this video and the panel discussion that followed. Below is link to the final video which IMO is quite amazing. It also features some very nice new video from local NEMS guide Matty Bowman.

And an article about "Adapting to Risk and Opportunity in Warmer Times Ahead" by Jimmy Voorhis and Michael Wejchert.

2023/2024 FUNDRAISER:
I am working with someone who is going to replace the outdoor ethernet CAT5 cable to get my webcam back up and running and I am going to send the webcam itself out to get serviced. Hopefully tat will get done before the weather fully turns to winter. Stay tuned..

So here we are starting that pesky Fundraiser for NEClimbs and The White Mountain Report. Just like every year for the past 15 or so, around the middle of October I ask all subscribers for a small donation. Tho I have been doing this since 1999, I haven't always asked for donations! That only started in 2004. But frankly without your support it would be very difficult to justify keeping this going like it is.

As you know, all year I put out our weekly White Mountain Reports on Facebook, Instagram and the NEClimbs web site. Usually only 4 issues of the Report, kind of like those NPR fundraisers, do I ask you for your supporr. Keeping you up to date with happenings in the Whites, providing the latest ice and rock conditions, reporting on events and people in the local climbing community and more consumes around 10 hours a week. That's not insignificant for anyone. And hey, I'm just like every other overworked semi-retired dude you know.

I figure that a minimal $20 donation isn't a heck-of-a-lot, is it? Don't wait to make YOUR contribution. Don't assume that others will pick up the slack. YOU are the one who signed up to be included on the mailing list! YOU read it every week, and I'm the one providing the service!

Please support NEClimbs and The White Mountain Report, send your check or money order for $20 now, OR make your contribution ON LINE via PayPal. It's easy & painless and you can use your credit card. Simply click the link below to make your donation...

SHAMELESS PLUG(s):
On this Friday I'll be at Big Day Brewing in Gorham on Friday from 6-8pm with the Jim McLaughlin Group. This is a jam band, a bit like PHISH! There are a bunch of videos of the band on FB I think most people would dig. This place has great food and beer. On Saturday I will be at Top Of the 9th in Fryeburg with my Bruce Marshall & the Shuffle playing blues and originals. And then on Sunday at the Dragonfly Barn in Bridgton with the Bradley Jazz Collective playing a tribute to Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. It's a fantastic band and the tunes are timeless.

INSTANT BUG REPORT - 1:
Still some remaining bugs out there, but not many. Stay tuned...

VALLEY CYCLING:
The weather has been up & down, leaving many of the trails back in the state there were in a month ago. IE muddy... But that's the game of mountain biking here in northern New England. As is often said, if you don't want to get muddy, ride on the road!

Mobile Version Of NEClimbs:
Up on one of the Mount Washington Valley's finest crags and want to know what that climb you're looking at is? Or maybe you're on your way up from Boston and want to check out the Ice Report for your upcoming weekend plans. Or more likely, you're at work just want to daydream about your next adventure. Well if you have a smart phone handy, you can get to NEClimbs from anywhere you have cell service. While it doesn't offer every single feature of the site and it's not an "app", in mobile form, it does do a whole lot and is very useful. Here is the live link to the mobile version of NEClimbs:

Check it out and if you have issues on your specific phone, please feel free to let me know.

NEClimbs & White Mountain Report On Facebook:
Join us and LIKE us on Facebook. I'll try and post interesting pix every Thursday and the latest Ice Report in the season, tho certainly not the whole Report. Here's where you can check it out:

Nobody climbs mountains for scientific reasons. Science is used to raise money for the expeditions, but you really climb for the hell of it.
