I was down in DC for a family event from Sunday through Tuesday evening. It's been quite a while since I have flown, so that was -uhhh- I might call it entertaining. [wry grin] The sheer volume of people in both airports, but most especially in Dulles, was something I haven't experienced in quite a while. Not to mention the traffic on even the local roads down there. It was in the 40's when I left on Sunday morning. On the wonderful side it was 80 degrees on Sunday and Monday, 70 on Monday afternoon. It was SO very nice to be warm!
[FROM THURSDAY MORNING]
So the power just flipped off and then right back on again. It took a few minutes for the internet to reset. We have a half inch of frozen slush & ice on the ground and now it's raining! I just spoke to a FIDIUM installer who had driven down through the Notch from Littleton around 8:30 and he said it was a real mess. I have an appointment today at 2, and unless it clears off by the time I'm done around 3, I will put off driving up to take my documentary pictures until tomorrow. It's not like there is really any ice to climb up there. At this moment (10:45am) it's so foggy I can't see Cathedral Ledge from my back deck!

Pictures from today, Friday, are here & on NEClimbs. Obviously the lower elevation ice is done. Here are also some pics of Cathedral & Whitehorse. It's almost time for warm granite folks...
Selected Ice Conditions effective February 19, 2026
Just as you would expect following Ice Fest AND a week of truly balmy temps, going to be upper 30's today, the ice can be a mixed bag. I saw someone post about how things are terrible. But digging into it, I realized they were talking about places like the North End that are very well used. It probably gets the most use of all. There are only a few places that have really easy access to moderate climbing and where you can set up a bunch of top-ropes. So that's not unexpected. And of course the climbs that are getting a lot of full sun are getting somewhat punked-out. On my way back from Wolfeboro mid-afternoon a few days ago I took a look at Rainbow Slabs which look as if they are getting pretty funky. And I watched a hunk of the bottom of Way In The Wilderness fall down! IMO it's really the time to start paying attention to what you're walking underneath, any time of the day. Enjoy this weather, but keep paying attention...

MUSICAL NOTES:
I am off this weekend, and then playing on Saturday 4/12 at Ledge Brewing as a duo with Jim McLaughlin. That should be a fun and creative evening.
VALLEY CYCLING:
I think it's time to get out the road bike until things dry out and find some clear and quiet places to ride. I don't have a gravel bike, so the roads out in Chatham and some of Fryeburg come to mind. If the Fryeburg Rec Path is clear that might also be nice. The Walmart end of the Conway Rec Path has been clear, but the Cranmore side is in the shade and still has snow.
Mobile Version Of NEClimbs:
Up on one of the Mount Washington Valley's finest crags and want to know what that climb you're looking at is? Or maybe you're on your way up from Boston and want to check out the Ice Report for your upcoming weekend plans. Or more likely, you're at work just want to daydream about your next adventure. Well if you have a smart phone handy, you can get to NEClimbs from anywhere you have cell service. While it doesn't offer every single feature of the site and it's not an "app", in mobile form, it does do a whole lot and is very useful. Here is the live link to the mobile version of NEClimbs:
Check it out and if you have issues on your specific phone, please feel free to let me know.

Climbing is a very dangerous sport. You can get hurt or even kill yourself. When you go climbing, you do so of your own free will. Everything on this site is to be taken with a grain of salt. Don't blame us if you get up some totally heinous route, in over your head and fall and hurt yourself.
