Hi Folks,
So, what's going on? Well besides the political tripe, quite a lot. Primarily there is of course, as always, THE WEATHER. Which is rapidly looking quite a bit more like fall than it has so far. And that's in spite of it being a low-intensity foliage year. Not saying that it's not colorful. But IMNSHO it doesn't have the "pop" that we've all grown to expect. And the Valley doesn't seem to be getting as much color either. But that certainly hasn't reduced the number of tourists on the roads or sidewalks here in the Valley! Go figure...

Last winter/spring there was an economic impact study done in coordination with partners at Vermont State University. Many of you also participated in that - thank you again! Highlights of the study revealed that ice climbing brings more than $6 million and 12,000 visitors annually to the Mount Washington Valley.
The results of the study will be presented and discussed at International Mountain Equipment in North Conway on Friday, October 17 at 7PM. Lead researcher Dr. Ben Mirkin from Vermont State University will be there to share the results and answer any questions. In addition, local climbers Kurt Winkler and Nick Aiello-Popeo will also be on hand to share stories of ice climbing in the valley from the early days in Crawford Notch to modern day, boundary pushing ascents.
There is no charge for this event.
A strong upper-level low will dive southward and continue advecting cold air into the region today. Meanwhile, a surface low will intensify offshore as high pressure builds in from the west, creating a rather tight pressure gradient. As a result, northerly winds will remain strong today, with gusts of up to 35 mph possible. With ample low-level moisture and strong winds in place, cloud cover will remain abundant today with a chance of upslope showers throughout today. A weak disturbance moving in from the north may increase the chance of showers in the afternoon. The chilly airmass overhead will keep high temperatures in the upper 40s today. The winds will gradually weaken over the course of tonight and tomorrow as the weak high pressure draws closer to the region. The airmass will begin to moderate on Friday, allowing high temperatures to reach the upper 50s under mostly sunny skies. Radiational cooling will still lead to a cold start Saturday morning, with lows just above freezing.

Vibist Jeff Loewer, my dear friend and musical partner of almost 50 years, will be joining me for a fun evening of jazz at the Majestic Cafe in Conway on Friday October 17th. We will be joined by Mike Sakash on sax and Tim Gilmore on drums. It's going to be an amazing reunion and I truly hope to see you there.

Two fun rides are in good shape right now; the Albany Town Forest and Rogers Crossing. These are pretty much flat riding, but fun. One runs along the Saco and the other along the Swift. I really like getting out on these in the summer or even in the winter since Rogers is actually groomed and Albany is almost always well packed.

| And what joy, think ye, did they feel after the exceeding long and troublous ascent? - after scrambling, slipping, pulling, pushing, lifting, gasping, looking, hoping, despairing, climbing, holding on, falling off, trying, puffing, loosing, gathering, talking, stepping, grumbling, anathemising, scraping, hacking, bumping, jogging, overturning, hunting, straddling, - for know you that by these methods alone are the most divine mysteries of the Quest reached. |
