These climbs are located just north of the historic Sandwich Notch road that runs from the town of Sandwich, west through the notch to Waterville Valley. The land where the climbing is located is owned by the Lakes Region Conservation Land Trust. |
From Center Sandwich take the Diamond Ledge Road, which becomes Sandwich Notch Road. Drive 3.6 miles from Center Sandwich. There are 3 areas.
Brilliant Corners Area.
Look for a Forest Service fee tube and self service pay station. Park where available. Follow a faint trail on the right side of the road to the Bearcamp River and the cliff. Walking time, 2 1/2 minutes.
Highlander Wall Area
Continue up Sandwich Notch Road 2/10 mile past the Brilliant Corners Area until 2 one-lane bridges are found with a large boulder near the road on the right. Park near the boulder or on the left shoulder near the bridge. Walk 100' back down the road and cross the small stream. The wall is 40 to 70 feet high and can usually be seen from the road. A number of small crags exist in this area, offering good toproping or short leads. The wall located behind the large boulder has been a popular toprope site for the Boy Scouts for years.
Half-Way Wall
Located half way between Highlander Wall and the Brilliant Corners area There are three good routes on this 20’ high South-facing wall. |
